iOS 26.4.2 doesn’t add any new emojis. It is a bug-fix and security update. The new iPhone emojis from the Unicode 17 (Emoji 17.0) batch, 🧑🩰, arrived earlier with iOS 26.4 on March 24, 2026, so you already have them if you’re on 26.4.2.
Which update added what
The version number is what confuses people. Emojis are approved by the Unicode Consortium in September, and Apple usually ships them in the “point-four” update the next spring. That’s why 26.4 got them and 26.4.2 did not.
| Version | Release | What it did | New emojis? |
|---|---|---|---|
| iOS 26.4 | March 24, 2026 | Added the Emoji 17.0 batch, plus other features | Yes, 8 new designs |
| iOS 26.4.1 | Early April 2026 | Fixed an iCloud sync problem | No |
| iOS 26.4.2 | April 22, 2026 (build 23E261) | Bug fixes and a security patch for deleted notifications being retained on the device | No |
Any version at or above 26.4 includes all eight. You don’t need 26.4.2 specifically. Apple’s notice for 26.4.2 lists iPhone 11 and later as eligible.
The 8 new emojis at a glance
Official names and the keywords for Distorted Face, Fight Cloud, Hairy Creature and Ballet Dancer come from Unicode’s emoji documents. For Orca, Trombone, Treasure Chest and Landslide, the third column is a plain description of the emoji. The last column is how people are likely to use each one, which is interpretation, not an official definition.
| Emoji | Official name | Unicode keywords / description | Likely use in chat |
|---|---|---|---|
| | Distorted Face | anxiety, bloated, panic, shocked, surprised, vulnerable | Overwhelm, awkward panic, “my brain is melting” |
| | Fight Cloud | argument, brawl, debate, disagreement, fight, ruckus, wrestle | A petty or comic squabble |
| | Hairy Creature | bigfoot, cryptid, sasquatch, yeti, woodwose, giant, forest | Mystery, vanishing, “I’m hiding” |
| | Orca | killer whale | Ocean and wildlife talk |
| | Trombone | brass instrument | Music, or a comic letdown |
| | Treasure Chest | chest of valuables | A prize, a great find, a reward |
| | Landslide | falling rocks and debris | Natural disasters, things collapsing |
| 🧑🩰 | Ballet Dancer | ballet, dancer, graceful, perform, twirl | Dance and performance |
What each new emoji means
The reaction emojis
Distorted Face is the most expressive of the batch. Its keywords lean toward anxiety, panic and vulnerability, and Unicode’s proposal describes it as a face that inflates and could suddenly collapse, a deliberately comic idea. That is why it reads as funny rather than frightening. It sits between “I’m overwhelmed” and “this is absurd,” so the words around it decide the tone.
Noah: The professor moved the deadline to tomorrow.
Priya: I haven’t even opened the assignment
Priya is stressed but joking. If she were truly in trouble, she’d probably say so in words.
Fight Cloud is the comic-book brawl cloud, the swirl of fists and stars. Because the cartoon version is comedic, it fits arguments you want to play down.
Leo: Who’s winning, you or your brother?
Dani: Nobody. Just over the remote again.
A harmless squabble. For a serious conflict, plain words are clearer, because this emoji makes a fight look silly.
The creatures
Hairy Creature is the Bigfoot, Yeti and sasquatch emoji. Expect it for anything elusive or hard to find.
Ava: Did you see Marcus at the party?
Kai: He vanished by 9. Total behavior.
Kai is teasing Marcus for disappearing without anyone noticing.
Orca is the killer whale. It is literal in most uses: animal facts, whale-watching, sea trips. Don’t read hidden meaning into it without context.
The objects
Trombone is a plain instrument emoji. In jokes it often signals a comic letdown, because of the “sad trombone” sound effect. That association comes from culture, not from Unicode.
Zoe: Practiced for hours and still missed the high note
Self-deprecating humor about a small failure.
Treasure Chest works for literal treasure, gaming loot, or praising a find.
Rina: Found a whole box of my grandfather’s old records.
Tom: That’s a
Tom is calling the find valuable, probably with sentimental weight.
Landslide is mostly literal: falling rocks, debris, collapse. It has the least built-in slang of the eight, so pair it with words if you mean something figurative.
🧑🩰 Ballet Dancer
This is a gender-neutral dancer, and it supports skin tones. Use it for dance, performances, or praising someone’s grace.
New emojis vs. look-alike older emojis
| New emoji | Often confused with | The difference |
|---|---|---|
| Distorted Face | 😵💫 😬 😱 | looks stretched and warped, suiting overload. 😵💫 means dizzy, 😬 awkward tension, 😱 outright fear. |
| Fight Cloud | 🤼 🥊 💥 | is the cartoon brawl itself. 🤼 shows wrestlers, 🥊 is boxing, 💥 is a burst with no fight. |
| Orca | 🐋 🐳 🐬 | is specifically the killer whale. The others are other whales and dolphins. |
| Landslide | 🪨 ⛰️ 🏔️ | shows debris falling. The others are static rock or mountains. |
| Hairy Creature | 🦍 🧌 | is the cryptid or Bigfoot figure. 🦍 is a real gorilla, 🧌 a troll. |
Why 8, 150 or 163? The skin tone additions
Three numbers circulate, and they describe different things.
- 8 is the number of new base designs (the table above).
- Skin tone variants were also added for two existing emojis, 🤼 People Wrestling and 👯 People With Bunny Ears, along with the Ballet Dancer’s skin tones. One report counts about 150 new variants.
- 163 is how Unicode’s Emoji 17.0 counts everything new: the new designs, their variants and the added sequences.
So “163 new emojis” is accurate in Unicode’s counting, but you’ll only see eight genuinely new faces, creatures and objects on the keyboard.
How to check you have them
On your iPhone
- Go to Settings → General → About and confirm the version is 26.4 or higher.
- Open any text field, tap the emoji key, and search for “orca” or “distorted.”
- If nothing shows, go to Settings → General → Software Update, install the latest version, and restart the keyboard.
Why friends may see a blank box
Emojis are a shared standard, but each platform adds support on its own schedule. Android 16 QPR3 adds the Unicode 17 emojis, but a friend on an older system may see a placeholder instead. When you send one of the new emojis, add a few words so the message still makes sense without it.
FAQ
Does iOS 26.4.2 add new emojis?
No. Apple’s release notes only mention bug fixes and security updates. The new emojis shipped in iOS 26.4.
Do I need 26.4.2 to get the new emojis?
No. Any version from 26.4 onward has them.
Was the Apple Core emoji added?
No. It appeared in the draft list but was left out of the final Unicode 17.0 and Emoji 17.0 release.
I’m still on iOS 18. Do I get them?
Coverage ties the new emojis to iOS 26.4. Reports about iOS 18.7.8 mention only the security fix, not emojis.
Is 26.4.2 worth installing?
It fixes a bug where deleted push notifications could be retained on the device. That’s unrelated to emojis, but it’s a good reason to update.
When do the next emojis arrive?
Unicode publishes a draft list each January and finalizes it in September. Check Unicode’s or Emojipedia’s current list for what is approved, because drafts can change.
